The Event that Changed Casino Security
The mass shooting at Mandalay Bay Resorts in Las Vegas sent shock waves through the casino industry and the world over. In the biggest mass shooting at a casino, Stephen Paddock, a regular high roller, opened fire from his hotel room killing 58 people. The event would change the face of casino security forever including restructuring do not disturb policies.
Given the nature of the casino environment, one would presume the security is incomparable. In other words, all the money coming in and going out requires high tech security features. But what of the security of casino patrons; this is precisely what was brought to light after the event.
The casino industry was forced to evaluate their security measures after experts described Nevada’s casino industry as a ‘soft target’. Also, critiques added that it was surprising that the tragedy hadn’t happened sooner.
Casino Security at Mandalay Bay
Casinos and resorts in Vegas and across the world work hard to create an escapism environment. While casinos work hard to provide excitement for patrons, they work twice as hard to protect the house. For example, an establishment; like Mandalay Bay has close to 3000 security cameras.
In fact, when visiting the casino, you are sure to spot hundreds of security cameras. The casino floor is surveyed by eye-in-the-sky and big brother; however, both are focused on the house’s money.
How then, given the constant surveillance did the casino’s security let slip Paddock’s AK47 and AR-10 battle rifle? Paddock smuggled the weapons into the resort in his luggage. Further Paddock planned and executed the massacre from his hotel room that had a do not disturb sign for three days. As mentioned above, the event leads to the restructuring of do not disturb policies.
But how do casinos balance emulating escapism and leisure with security screening? According to experts, it’s nearly impossible to scrutinise luggage without detracting from the fun escapism theme heavily.
Online Casino Security
Both land-based casinos and online casinos have the constant task of keeping gamblers safe. To explain, the event resulted in more gamblers turning to online casinos for the safety of their lives. However, the online casino industry’s security was also hit. To explain, there was cyber-attack in April last year, in which an online casino was the target of Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks.
In addition to the DDoS attacks, there are always hackers trying to obtain personal information from your online casino account. But reputable operators ensure that the industry standard of security is maintained.
