Australia’s Biggest Online Gaming Group is Over 55
Generally, baby boomers are expected to dominate the online gaming world, but a recent study performed by Nielsen proves otherwise. According to Nielsen, there are 1.9 million AU women, over 55 years playing online games. The study shows that in December 2017, these women spent almost an average of 16 hours gaming online. The number of minutes generated from smartphones totals to 51%. The next mobile gaming device of choice was a tablet at 38%, which was followed by desktop gaming at 11%.
The most popularly played titles include the likes of: Candy Crush Saga, Pokemon Go, Gardenscapes: New Acres, Homescapes and Words with Friends.
Online gamers over 55 made a total of 23% of the population, followed by 25 to 34 year olds with 20%, and 35 to 44s with 18%. The study also shows that minors between 2 and 17 years of age also participate in online gaming with a total of 10%.

According to a recent report in the United States, gaming on mobile devices has helped boost the social gaming industry and online gambling as a whole. A research note from Eliers & Krejcik Gaming noted that in the first three months of 2018, the total social gaming market grew by more than 18% – therefore increasing the overall gaming revenue to US$1.27 million over that period. Mobile gaming was responsible for most of that growth.
Over the past 12 months, the American market for social gaming climbed to US$4.72 billion, totalling up to 20% compared to the previous year. Meanwhile, mobile play using tablets and smartphones increased 25%.
“While the Eilers & Krejcik report focuses on gambling-related games, similar mechanics are also found in many popular puzzle and strategy titles that are popular amongst mobile users, including titles like Candy Crush Saga and Clash of Clans,” Krejcik added.
